The way this restaurant changes constantly yet simultaneously remains a longtime local favourite speaks to just how special it is.

Local produce and carefully selected ingredients form the foundation of a great menu. But deliciously unique dishes? Those come down to a chef’s creativity. And to the benefit of all who dine here, that creativity is nothing but nurtured at The Monday Room.

Everything here is homemade and comprised of the freshest local ingredients. The menu changes on a two to three month schedule, keeping patrons and chefs on their toes. The Monday Room’s iconic ‘Trust the Chef’ menu, one of the first to be offered in Christchurch, is delivered by kitchen and front of house teams in perfect symbiosis with one another. Their harmonious work brings social dining and European Bistro food together for a convivial atmosphere where it’s all about the food on both sides of the kitchen door.

If you opt for ‘Trust the Chef’ (most diners do) you’re in the very best of hands. The Chef-Owner Hannah Cooper-Grieve and her team consistently present and portion perfect representations of their seasonal menu. They incorporate saltiness, sweetness, acidity, colour, starch and richness into every table’s array of sharing plates. It’s a comprehensive and downright fun way to dine. Each dish features four to five elements and while well-loved mains have included paella and beef wellington, the details like ginger mayo and smoked celeriac are what make for a multi-dimensional eating experience.

At just $65 per head the ‘Trust the Chef’ also offers diners a low stakes opportunity to try dishes they might not normally take a chance on. And unlike some tasting menus, the price is right and no one leaves hungry.

Located in the only completely original building left on south High Street, this spot boasts a rare pre-quake feel with exposed brick, steel beams, funky light fixtures and a dark wood bar. The way this restaurant changes constantly yet simultaneously remains a longtime local favourite speaks to just how special it is.
