Dice & Slice in Christchurch is a top-notch spot for New York Style pizza and local beverages, with a hearty side of board games.

Dice & Slice in Christchurch is a top-notch spot for New York Style pizza, craft beer and local wine. What's more? All of it comes with a hearty side of board games.

This board game bar is one of a kind in Christchurch. Unlike similar concepts found in other cities - they don’t charge a cover fee. So come as you are, ready to enjoy great food, great drink and great board games. All they ask is that you buy some kai or drinks from the bar, simple really. Then play to your heart’s content, even late into the night if you wish—Dice & Slice is open until late and never closes earlier than 11pm.

Located in the SALT district, this bar is in the centre of it all. When you arrive, simply find a table, head to the bar to place your order, wander over to the shelves and pick a game.

Dice & Slice stocks everything from family favourites like Guess Who to cult classics like Dungeons & Dragons. They’ve got the full spectrum from quick-to-learn to strategy intensive games. Favourites include Articulate, Ticket to Ride, Catan, Wingspan, Candyland, Terraforming Mars, Checkers and Battleship. New games are added every week.

If you can’t decide on a game, just chat to the team. On top of being hospo experts, they’re all board game enthusiasts, too. Owners Chris and Nicole and their team are happy to suggest games. Chris can actually explain most of them in just a few minutes.

Crack into your game and your freshly baked pizza will soon arrive. Dice & Slice does everything by the slice which makes it easy to snack and play at the same time. If you’ve been to BASE next door at Little High, you actually already know how good these slices are going to be. Or go the whole hog, and order a 20 inch New York style pizza pie which are perfect to share with the whole crew.

Chris helped start BASE just after the earthquakes and the recipes have stayed in the family. Slices here are done New York style. They’re big, sturdy and full of flavour. The classic cheese is constructed with a house made base, tomato sauce and oozy mozzarella. Add meatballs, ham, mushrooms, pineapple, spinach, vegan cheese, chilli sauce and more to build your dream slice.

Dice & Slice also boasts a pretty killer beverage selection. Think local beers on tap, craft cans in the fridge, New Zealand wines by the glass and some super cool cocktails. Their ‘Potions’ come served in a swirling glass globe. The ‘Potion of Health’ is made with gin, lemon, apple, and cranberry. It’s bright red, totally sippable and looks pretty cool within Dice and Slice’s dark, moody interior. Speaking of which, be sure to wander down the back where there’s heaps more room for board gaming, a mezzanine, and one special nook called ‘The Room of Mirrors’.

Dice & Slice doesn’t just support local when it comes to food and bev, though. A good chunk of the games in their library are actually made in and around Christchurch. So head along and check it out. If you’ve got a specific game you’d like to play - you can always BYO, too.
