50 Bistro
Nestled inside inner city luxury hotel The George, 50 Bistro is an elegant restaurant with an effortlessly charming atmosphere. Serving quality fare from dawn til dusk, the kitchen and front-of-house team here work hard to ensure a pleasurable experience at any time of the day.
Don’t shy away if you are not intending to stay at the hotel, non-guests are welcomed to 50 Bistro with open arms. Why not take advantage of what the hotel has to offer with high tea, lunch or dinner with a group of friends?
The menu here is very much influenced by the seasons and uses local produce as much as possible. Ideally, executive chef Chanaka Jayabahu sources his products for...

5th Street
Walk through the doors of the beautiful 5th Street and one thing is blindingly obvious: this is a place that has been created with a lot of care. Care for the stunning f (formerly a fruit and vegetable warehouse before being transformed by owners Chris Penny, Jonathan Spark, Sam Stewart and Max Perry), for the smiling and proud staff, for the delicious food and drink delivered to each table and finally, care for each visitor who walks through the door – ensuring they feel welcome, comfortable and valued.
With this amount of consideration and care for a dining experience, it’s no wonder 5th Street is an outstanding spot for evening dining and is a...

Addington Coffee Co-op (1)
Addington Coffee Co-op is, simply put, a great café and a true Christchurch institution.
It first opened back in 2008 and is housed within a repurposed building that once functioned as an auto electrician and a mechanic’s workshop. High ceilings, exposed beams, brickwork and warm wood, plus floor-to-ceiling windows, create a space where you’ll want to linger. Add to that a collection of vintage chairs and tables, large rugs and a couple of couches, plenty of greenery and a box full of kid's toys and you may as well be sitting in a cosy lounge at a good friend’s place – a good friend who also makes excellent coffee and food.
From the...

Akaroa Butchery
It is decorated in the colours of France, but behind the red, white and blue facade of La Boucherie du Village, you will find locally sourced provender at its finest at the Akaroa Butchery.
Not just the home of award-winning ham and sausages, the Akaroa Butchery and Delicatessen is also home to black pudding, condiments and sauces, spices, fresh bread and cheeses.
Cured meats hang from the roof, old, tin scales and bread bins atop shelves, and a wooden pegboard is displayed behind the counter.
Staff are friendly and informative, and co-owner Fred is a champion of Akaroa and Canterbury products being used in traditional ways.
Influenced by Italian and...

Allpress Espresso
Come see what all the fuss is about and make a trip to the Allpress café on the Sydenham side of Montreal Street. A clean, open space, for encouraging free thinking on coffee dates and business meetings. What was an old junk-filled mechanic workshop has since been converted into a stylish, modern café space and barista training facility (have a look at the photos on top of the food cabinet to see the transformation that has taken place).
Order a piccolo and peek through the glass windows into their training service hub, where the Allpress baristas of Christchurch are taught the craft of fine coffee. The café has a cabinet of Italian-style sandwiches,...

Ally & Sid
On the corner of Walker Street and Montreal, you’ll find Ally & Sid, a breezy spot for excellent coffee, tasty cabinet fare and a big side of sunshine. Housed in an old rubber moulding factory Ally & Sid marries antique industrial details with plenty of greenery, a pinky orange colour scheme, spacious wooden tables, big windows and a garage door that lets the outdoors in when it’s nice out.
Samuel and Aimee Nimmo knew that they always wanted to open a café and their passion for top-quality yet approachable coffee is apparent. The two keep things running day to day and after seven plus years on the Christchurch hospitality scene, Samuel really knows...

Arbour Woodfire Pizza
Nestled in-between a hairdresser and a backpacker, Arbour Woodfire Pizza in Lyttelton is striking from the curb.
The building has been custom-built as the owners' original pop-up pizza joint was in need of an upgrade. The exterior is awash with cypress and an elaborate gate. Designed to look somewhat mysterious, it invites closer inspection.
Step inside and there’s no mistake you’re “in port”. An old Lyttelton fishing boat – adorned with cast iron mermaid – has been reclaimed and repurposed as a centrepiece bar. This charming seafaring vessel makes the space feel homely and familiar. The rest of the interior is...

Austin Club
The secret is out on Christchurch’s late-night bar scene – introducing: the Austin Club. This speak-easy imitation lies hidden in a basement down an alleyway between Cashel and High Street. Entry, in true prohibition-era style, is strictly by password only (this changes monthly and is available on the club’s website and social media channels). Once through the pineapple door, a graffitied stairway leads you down towards the bar where all the magic happens.
Low ceilings, dark wood and dim lighting create a glamorous feel within this unique space. The drinks list is heaving with cocktails and an impressive array of atypical spirits you won’t find at every...

Barefoot Eatery
In October 2014, Katie and Will Ross opened the Greenroots Juicery stall at the Christchurch Farmers Market. Fast forward six years and they’re still trading at the market but are also operating Barefoot Eatery, a CBD spot for all things nutritious and delicious, seven days a week.
Located within The Welder, Barefoot Eatery’s menu is full of colour, wholesome ingredients, locally sourced produce and a lot of love. While there is still a strong focus on juice, the cafe offers smoothies, açai bowls, waffles, burgers, soups and cabinet treats that all fall into the ‘extremely moreish yet good for you’ category.
For breakfast,... -
Barrys Bay Cheese
A few things were happening in 1895. Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake premiered, Swedish businessman Alfred Nobel passed away establishing The Nobel Peace Prize in his will and in Banks Peninsula, New Zealand, Barrys Bay Cheese was hand-making its first block of cheddar.
Over 120 years on and Barrys Bay Cheese is still creating delicious, memorable cheeses. Although the factory may have changed (in 1952 the first factory sadly went down in flames so a new one was built) everything else remains the same – the handcrafted cheese still as sensational as ever, the milk still locally sourced from grass-fed cows on the Banks Peninsula and the love and care dedicated by the...

Bellbird Bakery
Bellbird is everything you want in a local bakery: beautiful, simple design, cheerful customer service, a thermos of filtered coffee on the countertop that invites you to help yourself, and some of the most delicious traditional pastries and bread that you can find in Christchurch.
While classic pastries like the Almond Croissant rank as one of their best sellers at Bellbird Bakery, you can also find the team trying out new recipes and pushing the boundaries with more inventive offerings. Take, for example, a recent Pastry of the Month, a caramel, tahini and dark chocolate swirl, or their new Waitaha Sourdough loaf, a fusion of white and whole wheat flours sourced from North... -
Bessie
Dark, a little brooding and faultless in its theme, Bessie is an immaculate display of fine dining in the inner city. Antlers take the place of coat hooks, while saws, cleavers and skillets hang from the kitchen framing and fur pelts dangle off chairs. Heavy menus are encased in leather and brass edging giving a modern day twist. Long tables, black leather booths and plenty of tables for two, mean the space flawlessly caters to all size groups.
Friendly staff greet you upon arrival and talk you through the menu (they are definitely worth listening to for condiment advice). A bar tucked at the street end provides an elegant area to wait for a table, or simply to start the night...

Black Burger
Found in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Christchurch's Riverside Market, is the small but perfectly primed kitchen that Black Burger calls home.
What started as an idea born out of lockdown boredom, quickly gathered pace, and for those of you that salivate over a classic LA-style cheeseburger, this is the place for you.
Black Burger is motivated by one mission… to source the finest ingredients and from these make the best damn cheeseburger in New Zealand. While this may sound simple, the execution is beyond delicious, from the Canterbury-reared Black Origin wagyu used to make the patties, to the Grizzly brioche buns and the crowd favourite McClure’s...

Black Estate
A winery, tasting room and restaurant, Black Estate is famous not only for its organic and biodynamic wines but its refreshing approach to food. Locally sourced and organic produce gets turned into seasonal lunches every day of the week at this Waipara eatery.
At least 90% of the produce comes from Canterbury and is used to make meals like roast duck leg with quinoa salad and seasonal vegetables; gnocchi with rainbow chard, sage, parmesan and lemon; or catch of the day with cauliflower, potato mash, cavelo nero and clam butter. To finish, try one of their fine desserts ranging black-boy peach pudding to chocolate and Waipara honest mousse, or local cheese with homemade crackers...

Bohemian Bakery Central City
Tucked away in the SALT District, Bohemian Bakery’s second storefront is a cozy enclave filled with the smells and sounds of a traditional bakery humming away as it pumps out some of the most delicious baked goods to be found in the CBD. Follow your nose to the Little High Eatery car park on St Asaph St, and poke around in the far corner to find the charming bakery entrance.
When Maka Angyalova got sick of her corporate job she decided she wanted to bake. She mastered the art of pastry and opened Bohemian Bakery in Sumner three years ago. After attracting a large and loyal following, she opened the centre city counterpart which boasts the same quality with even more...

There are six different varieties of bread available, with an emphasis on their award winning sourdough baguette.
A host of other ready-to-eat baked goodies also stack the shelves, including Hungarian goulash meat pies, vegetarian quiches, vegan pies and pastries, croissants, and a great selection of exquisite sweet treats....

Bonobo Café
Bonobo: a benevolent primate, a trip-hop artist and more recently a plant-based cuisine destination in the seaside suburb of Sumner. Bonobo is a bold café making waves in more ways than one.
Owners Annelies and Deane, both Sumner locals, spent lockdown ruminating on the endless possibilities for this stand-out corner hospitality spot on Marriner Street. They approached the then owners about buying, a seed was planted, and they opened after a big renovation job in late 2021. The black exterior juxtaposes brilliantly with the bright hot pink and turquoise blue interior, awash with plants and natural light giving you the sense you are close to nature yet embraced by...

Boo's
As you walk off the footpath of Victoria Street and up the stairs to Boo’s, be prepared for a taste of Southern American hospitality, complete with inviting speakeasy vibes and a well-stocked bar. The premise of Boo’s is simple; whiskey, food and music, and the experience here definitely delivers on all three fronts.
The attention to detail that has gone into the decor first captures your eye as you walk through the door - the bar is a showpiece. If you are a lover of pool, there is a perfectly formed nook with a table and space for spectators, and when you enter the main dining space, there is an instant sense of cosiness and comfort, emanating from the...
