Take a Break and Relax
So, it’s been a hectic week and you need some time out from the hustle and bustle of everyday responsibilities. Get away from it all right here in Canterbury, from soaking in the hot pools of Hanmer Springs to watching Kaikoura’s resident whales float by!
How to Relax in Christchurch
You’ve arrived in Christchurch, itching to get on that relaxation train. Spend the early afternoon taking a peaceful stroll around Botanic Gardens – or give those legs a break and hop on a garden tour.
Let the afternoon float by as you glide down the Avon River with an Edwardian style punter, snuggled under blankets and a glass of wine on hand.
Make your way to Riverside Market and indulge in a locally sourced feed. Everything from the usual farmers’ market fare to sushi-trains and kombucha bars are on offer and better enjoyed alongside the Avon River – picnic style.
Unwind in Hanmer Springs
Pack the bags – you’re going on a road trip. Before you go, why not start the day right with a hearty breakfast in Sumner? No better way to enjoy the most important meal of the day with an ocean view and good vibes.
Buckle up your seatbelts, it’s time to head to the rejuvenating alpine town of Hanmer Springs, just 90-minutes north from Christchurch. You’ll need a bike to explore the picturesque mountain bike tracks or set your own pace and wander through the stunning Hanmer Forest.
Get the togs and towel ready and discover why Hanmer’s thermal pools and spa are a crowd favourite among the masses. Hydroslides, lane pools, private pools and Aqua Therapy – what more could you want!
Keep it low key at the end of the day and rock up to a local pub for some good grub and local banter.
Venture to Kaikoura
Set off early and continue the journey to Kaikoura, where the mountains meet the sea, located 90-minutes away from Hanmer Springs. Getting close to nature will do you wonders in the relaxation department, especially as the area is widely known for its abundance in seafood!
Have a whale of a time getting up close and personal with the resident sperm whales, and an afternoon stroll around the peninsula will guarantee you a sighting of the cute seals lounging in the sun.
It’s always 5pm somewhere, right? End your relaxation journey on a wine note by making a pit stop at the Waipara Valley wineries. It’s a 2.5 hour drive back to Kaikoura from Christchurch, so wine not?
Wine puns aside, Pegasus Bay, Black Estate and Waipara Hills all have cellar doors and delicious restaurants waiting to refuel you on your journey home.
