The Canterbury Museum

The Canterbury Museum located at the entry to the Botanic Gardens is a Christchurch icon, first opening its doors to the public on the 1 October 1870. Over time, the original building designed by architect Benjamin Mountfort has evolved with additions made to house the ever-growing collection.

Highlights include:

  • The world's largest collection of Moa bones.
  • The largest and most diverse collection of Antarctic memorabilia and photos in the world. 
  • The unique and quirky exhibition of Fred and Myrtle's Paua Shell House.
