24 hours in Christchurch

With a little planning, you can fit so much into just one day, and we’ve designed this itinerary to inspire you. Whether you are solo, in a couple or a group, these ideas cover something for everyone.

Inside Unknown Chapter

Start with breakfast

Any good day of exploring starts with breakfast, so pop into one of Christchurch’s many cafés for a bite to eat and some caffeine. If you are staying in the central city, you are spoilt for choice with many options for a delicious brunch and great coffee. Many are walking distance from within the central city, favourites include C1 Espresso, Unknown Chapter, Akin, Miro and Doubles. Other great options that are a little further out include Hello Sunday, Little Poms and Gentle Giant.

Get ready to paddle

For a unique way to see some of the city, check out Punting on the Avon. An iconic Christchurch attraction, punting allows you to relax on board and see the city from a different perspective. Take in the stunning scenery of the Botanic Gardens as you travel slowly along the river propelled by your skilled punter in Edwardian attire.

Long lunch above the city or central city dining

A visit to Tussock Hill is a luxurious way to spend a few hours in Christchurch. Nestled on the rocky slopes of the Port Hills overlooking Christchurch City, Tussock Hill produces high-quality organic wines and is only a short drive from the city centre.

The Cellar Door restaurant, located in the Arts Centre, serves a delicious selection of seasonal sharing plates that highlight local Canterbury produce, paired with thoughtfully curated wine and views that can’t be beat. A stroll around the city promenade, which winds alongside the Avon River, is a great way to get some fresh air after lunch.

Take some time to chill

For a late afternoon escape, head out to New Brighton for a visit to He Puna Taimoana. After a day full of activity, a soak in the seaside hot pools is just what's needed. Enjoy the ocean views while lapping up five luxurious pools, or for those who want the full wellness experience, there is a plunge pool, steam room and a sauna with glorious sea views too.

Finish with a delicious dinner

With its colourful, Spanish mission style architecture, New Regent Street boasts an abundance of unique restaurants, vibrant bars and indulgent dessert spots. With a mix of high-end and more casual eats, there is something for whatever your preference. And don’t forget to finish with something sweet at Rollickin Gelato. If you nab a table outside, you might even catch the tram running down the middle of the street.

Riverside Market or Little High Eatery are also great casual dining options. They're both marketplace-style eateries with plenty of cuisine options and lots of shared indoor and outdoor seating.
