One Monday morning in 1975, Christchurch technician Karl Marshall answered the phone. By Friday, he was at the South Pole servicing a 3M 209 photocopier.
Fifty years on, a frozen 209 sits beneath Ferrymead's historic US Navy LC-47, spilling pages from people whose lives Antarctica has touched. Join artist Rewa Rendall and polar historian Dr Ursula Rack to open 209 Antarctic Connections: read the pages, hear the stories, and add your own connection.
Then walk to Kinsey's Cottage & Darkroom to discover where the visitors book was signed, and step into the darkroom, where historical photographic techniques are still used to handcraft wet plate portraits. Finish with afternoon tea at Curragh House, put on by the Friends of Ferrymead Society.
