University of Canterbury is proud to host Gateway Antarctica which is our Centre for Antarctic Studies and Research. Gateway Antarctica brings together a broad range of academic expertise from across the University campus to play a leading role in national and international Antarctic research. This includes areas such as engineering in extreme environments, Antarctica's role in climate change, remote sensing of animal populations, connections between Antarctica and New Zealand and human influences in and on Antarctica. We play an important role in developing policy advice for government and work across disciplinary boundaries to create research of global significance and strategic importance to New Zealand.

Gateway Antarctica offer a selection of courses at undergraduate level focussed on Antarctica and the surrounding Southern Ocean. We offer two postgraduate offerings, the Postgraduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies and the Master of Antarctic Studies, which were jointly developed by the University of Canterbury and Antarctica New Zealand, these are the only courses in the world to offer students the experience of life in the Antarctic – at Scott Base, New Zealand’s Antarctic research station on Ross Island.
