Should synthetic biology be used to save threatened species? We will hear from two University of Canterbury scientists on this scientific debate.
Free event
Professors Tammy Steeves and Jack Heinemann work in the same University of Canterbury department but differ on the scientific debate: Should synthetic biology be used to save threatened species?
Both genetics experts will discuss why they have different views on this debate and will also summarise other GM issues they encounter in their research.
The evening will include an introduction to the International Union of Conservation for Nature (IUCN) and how its mission might be augmented with synthetic biology, along with a primer on synthetic biology. The pros and cons of adopting a case-by-case approach for use and release of organisms genetically modified through synthetic biology for conservation and agriculture will also be traversed. If there is time there will be a short Q and A session at the end.
