NORTH CANTERBURY, NZ — Local researcher and former Royal New Zealand Navy serviceman David Arkenstone Barnett is set to present a public lecture examining one of the most compelling maritime mysteries in regional naval history: the 1987 HMNZS Southland and its encounter with an Unidentified Submerged Object.
Drawing directly from his service aboard the Leander-class frigate HMNZS Southland, Barnett provides a rare, technical look into deep-water acoustic tracking, military sonar operations, and Unidentified Submerged Objects (USOs) within the waters of New Zealand.
Utilizing data from the ship’ sonar array, the presentation moves past speculatory myth to focus on documented signal patterns, hydrographic anomalies, and the intersection of marine physics with Cold War-era naval monitoring.
"The goal of this presentation is to bring a disciplined, analytical perspective to maritime phenomena," says Barnett. "By reviewing the actual sonar telemetry, hydro-acoustic environment, and operational context of the 1987 event, we can examine these occurrences through the lens of science and naval record."
