Christchurch and Banks Peninsula residents are invited to explore the recently completed parts of Takapūneke Reserve and help plant 2,500 native trees.
At 10.15am there will be a brief history talk about the reserve – a site of great spiritual significance to mana whenua and to the nation. Attendees can then go on a walking tour to hear the kōrero behind the newly unveiled pou, design and artworks. The planting will commence at 11.15am, followed by a sausage sizzle at the Red House from 1pm, provided by the Christchurch City Council Park Rangers.
The event has been timed to coincide with Matariki, which signals the start of the Māori New Year with the rising of the Matariki star cluster. In Canterbury, the rising of Puaka (Rigel) is also celebrated, and studied for signs of what the coming year might hold.
The public should gather at one of newly built takarangi, near the Britomart Monument. Accessible parking and access is available via the Beach Rd entrance. General public parking is available at the Ōnuku Road car park. Please note parking is limited.
The reserve is wāhi tapu, so please leave your dog at home, and do not eat food onsite. Water bottles are okay.
