Clothes look better on the body when they fit properly, and we cannot always get that with store bought garments. The first step to making a sewing pattern that fits your body is creating a block. A block is a pattern making template of a particular garment (e.g. bodice, trousers, skirt) and its purpose is to become a pattern-making blueprint for your body. It does not include seam allowence and design details, but from one custom block you can create many different patterns by adding ease, pleats, and other design features.

You will learn how to take proper body measurements and carry out basic calculations to create your pattern block. For those who have some pattern making experience already, you will be supported in making more complex blocks such as a bodice with set-in sleeves, dress block, or a jacket.

Block paper and some pattern making tools will be provided by the tutor, but learners will also need to supply some of their own equipment (full material list provided on the course information sheet).

Note: More complex blocks may take more than one workshop to complete.
