Nestled beside historic St Peter’s Church, Kowai Pass Cemetery has links with both the farming and the railway history of the Springfield area.
Dating from around 1876, it includes a memorial to Boer War soldiers. Here lies Henry Walles, a Royal Navy quartermaster and goldminer who led a team excavating the Lyttelton tunnel, then became the guard on the first train through it!
Others buried here include suffragists, wealthy landowners, struggling farmers, and those who wanted to ‘improve’ the land or the lives of others.
