More information:
This 6-day workshop is designed as a direct pathway toward our 2029 10-city South Island tour (February) and European tour (October/November). As part of this vision, we are developing a youth Baroque ensemble that will eventually present a programme featuring works by New Zealand composers including Rakuto Kurano, Anthony Ritchie, and Mark Menzies. For this workshop, however, the focus will be entirely on Baroque masters, with a particular emphasis on Concerto Grosso repertoire.
Beyond the 2029 touring vision, this workshop also prepares students for the opportunity to perform with the Trust in our regular domestic concert series. We present over 23 concerts each year across the South Island and are committed to training and supporting the next generation of musicians to join us on stage.
Participants will receive an exceptional 36 hours of tuition—more contact time than some programmes offer across an entire year. With four specialist tutors working closely with a select group of just 15 students, the workshop provides a uniquely supportive environment, combining one-on-one coaching, small group sessions, and full ensemble work. Through this intensive format, students will develop key Baroque performance skills—including articulation, ornamentation, and stylistic understanding—while gaining hands-on experience on a Baroque instrument and building the ensemble awareness, confidence, and discipline required for high-level performance.
Participation in the workshop is open to all interested in Baroque interpretation; there is no requirement to audition for the tours or perform with us in the future. However, it offers a valuable opportunity for those who may wish to prepare for this pathway.
This is an exciting chance to experience the world of concert touring—performing across New Zealand and Europe, travelling, and bringing this music to life in the beautiful spaces it was written for.
