On a Monday morning in 1975, Christchurch technician Karl Marshall answered the phone. By Friday, he had unexpectedly reached the South Pole to service a photocopier.
Fifty years later, Karl’s story has inspired 209 Antarctic Connections — a growing collection of ordinary and extraordinary stories connecting people to the Ice.
We’re collecting stories now!
Everyone has a page. What’s yours?
This October, your story will join an immersive installation beneath Ferrymead’s historic US Navy LC-47 aircraft. The journey continues inside Kinsey’s Cottage & Darkroom, connecting these contemporary stories with Sir Joseph Kinsey’s historic Visitors Book and its remaining blank pages.
Together, they will help continue a remarkable human record begun more than a century ago — connecting Antarctica’s past with its community today, one page at a time.
