Ōtautahi Christchurch locals love to be in the know, and that means being up on the city’s many hidden gems.
From world-class hospitality to scenic spots, Ōtautahi is a special place that we will never tire of discovering and re-discovering over again. The city is a playground for nature lovers, big-time foodies and those searching for a little peace and quiet.
Here are a few favourite local spots, too good to be kept a secret.
Kayak ramp on the Ōtākaro Avon River
How many of you have kayaked on the Ōtākaro Avon River? Christchurch has one of the country’s only central city kayak launch ramps, directly into the river. It’s part of the Avon loop walkway on Oxford Terrace which makes it easier than ever to explore the river from water level. You’ll find it just off Kilmore St near Pomeroy’s.
Grizzly Baked Goods
A loaf of sourdough bread just screams Sunday morning, whether you're feeling gourmet with a home-made eggs benny, or keeping it simple with a classic vegemite toast, the perfect slice can do it all. A hidden gem of freshly baked bread in Christchurch has to be Grizzly Baked Goods, located in several spots across the city.
The Tannery
On the fringe of the city stands one of our most beautiful shopping destinations. The Tannery is an exquisite atrium-style building, home to an array of high-end shops, quirky one-of-a-kind finds, and delicious treats. The handmade dumplings are a must try, and the array of different stores will have you perusing for hours.
Southshore Spit
An accessible peninsula surrounded by birdlife and epic views? Why have we not all been to Southshore Spit? Weekend activity sorted. Boardwalks, open spaces, sand dunes and an endless beach. Start at South New Brighton Domain and head south along the estuary. Loop around the spit and come back along the dunes.
Bottle Lake Fairy Village
Waitākiri/Bottle Lake Forest Park is not just a hub for walking, biking and horse riding, it's also home to 100's of fairy houses in the enchanting fairy village. Enjoy a taste of woodland magic by exploring the beautifully crafted and unique fairy homes. The fairy door walk is flat and accessible, suitable for kids both young and old!
Paddy McNaughton's
Bringing a touch of old Ireland charm to our city centre, Paddy McNaughton’s is the place to gather with your friends over a pint of guinness. The cosy, home-style pub is a warm and intimate space where you can settle in and feel right at home. There is always so much happening throughout the week — head along on a Monday for games night, Wednesday for quiz night, or get in on the great vibes with live music Thursday through Saturday.
Orton Bradley Park
If 650ha of forest park, over 25km of walking tracks, a children’s adventure playground, mountain bike tracks, native trees, picnic spots, camping spots, and a restored historic stone cottage sounds like a bit of you, then Orton Bradley Park is a destination you want to check out.
This is a great park situated on the Southern Shores of Lyttelton Harbour wh,ere families can go for a day trip or even to camp during the months of December and January. There is an entry fee that ensures the upkeep of the park and buildings — $5 per adult $1 per child, or just $10 per carload.,
