Akaroa Area School is a year 1-13 school with approximately 110 students. International students stay in homestays in the picturesque village of Akaroa or in farmland and bays surrounding our beautiful harbour. Akaroa Area School offers a tailored experience for students with a focus on the outdoors, conservation and the environment.

Located on Banks Peninsula, approx 80 kms from the city of Christchurch, Akaroa Area School has a strong connection with the local environment, especially the ocean. The school has kayaks, surfboards, paddle boards and yachts available for student use and the school conducts many classes based around and on Akaroa harbour and nearby bays.

We also have a strong environmental programme and students are involved in running a long-term reforestation project, they undertake work experience with our local Department of Conservation and work with Pest Free Banks Peninsula.

Class sizes are small, it is easy to get to know classmates and develop strong friendships. Students are also given individual attention by teachers. Students looking to experience a small and friendly school, situated in one of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand will love their time with us.
