Team-building in Christchurch
Ōtautahi Christchurch’s walkable, vibrant city centre provides the perfect backdrop for team-building activities that are guaranteed to surprise and delight participants.
Using their Amazing GPS Race platform, The Events Group staged two concurrent team-building events for Ryman Healthcare in Christchurch in October. Two groups — one of 160 and another of 60 staff — from across New Zealand took part during the company’s leadership conference at Te Pae Christchurch.
The Amazing GPS Race combines award-winning technology with the Amazing Race concept to create a unique team-building experience. The unique app uses GPS to unlock hotspots with Google Maps.

A chance to experience the central city
This was a chance for the Ryman team to experience the central city of Christchurch and to make the most of a beautiful spring day with some fresh air and fun amongst the colourful garden and river setting.
General Manager of The Events Group, Meredith Drucker says, Christchurch is a perfect city for this event — the compact CBD is easy to get around, filled with beautiful sights, nature, and plenty of unique activity options.

A tram takeover
Each team was given an iPad, pre-loaded with challenges, a live scoreboard and an interactive map. Challenges were customised to incorporate tasks relevant to the Ryman Healthcare team.
The Events Group worked with Christchurch Attractions, who run the city’s tramway, to take over three of the iconic heritage trams. They set the course and provided custom signage and activations on the trams.
Catered to any requirements
The Amazing GPS Race can be tailored to any group of any size and budget, and can be an activity to create an overarching bridge during a half-day off for delegates — the Ryman Healthcare events filled a morning, from 9 am to 12.30 pm.
“We can make it fun and foodie with cocktail challenges at the city’s incredible array of bars, wine tastings and creative food options too. For smaller groups, punting on the Avon is another fabulous choice," says Drucker.
Session wrap-up
Back at Te Pae Christchurch, before lunch, each of the teams met for a wrap-up de-brief session, showing the highlight photos and video content and assets they had created on their journey.

Katrina continued on to say, “It was a brilliant way to spend the second morning of our conference. We were able to customise some elements of the race, which was perfect for us, as it allowed us to weave our conference themes through the race.
