Methven and home to Mt Hutt

Methven is recognised as a snow‑sports hub and the perfect base for winter skiing, with world regonised ski field Mt Hutt located just 35 minutes away. This rural town is known for its warm hospitality, relaxed lifestyle, and strong sense of community.

Mt Hutt

Mt Hutt is Canterbury’s largest and best‑serviced ski resort, with a well‑maintained access road, immaculately groomed pistes, and an impressive lift network. The eight‑seater Nor’West Express is a standout—superfast, comfortable, and capable of whisking skiers to the top in just two minutes.

  • High elevation (roughly 2,086 m)
  • Consistent snowfalls and often has one of the longest ski seasons in the country

Selwyn and home to Porters Alpine Resort & club ski fields

Porters Alpine Resort is the largest ski field in the Selwyn district and the closest mountain to Christchurch, making it one of the easiest winter getaways in the region. Within one to one and a half hours’ drive, you can be carving turns on its wide, sun‑soaked slopes. It is also home to a variety of club ski fields offering off-piste skiing, varied terrain and an authentic, real and connected mountain experience.

Porters Alpine Resort

Porters is the closest ski resort to Christchurch. With a more laid back, cruisy atmosphere and generally less crowded it's perfect for families or for those that like more space. The access road is relatively short with great parking right next to the ski field. The Easy Rider quad chairlift provides access to varied terrain.

Good for:

  • Beginners and first-timers, Porters is regarded as one of the best places in Canterbury to learn to ski or snowboard
  • Long, groomed runs, excellent for the beginner to intermediate transition
  • Steep iconic runs like the Big Mama
  • Gear hire and on mountain restaurant & bar.

What are the club ski fields located in the Selwyn district?

The club ski fields of the Selwyn district are located within a 90 minute to 2 hours drive west of Christchurch. The fields are varied, independently operated, non‑profit ski areas run by passionate communities of volunteers. They provide a more relaxed, friendly, and social atmosphere. The ski terrain is vast and predominantly off‑piste, making them ideal for adventurous skiers and riders. You won’t find flashy chairlifts or on‑mountain gear hire here!

Mt Cheeseman

Mt Cheeseman is a club‑run ski field known for its friendly atmosphere, uncrowded slopes, and convenient on‑mountain accommodation. With a sunny aspect and a mix of groomed trails and off‑piste terrain, the mountain offers something for every ability level. Access is provided by two T‑bars, with the dedicated learners’ area served by a rope tow. Please note there is no gear hire on the mountain.

Good for:

  • Ski weeks - stay on the mountain and enjoy full days on the slopes, stepping straight out the door onto the snow
  • Sunny, wide‑open bowls - ideal for cruisy laps and confidence‑building terrain.
  • Backcountry access - explore beyond the patrolled area, however a working transceiver is essential.

Temple Basin

Temple Basin is one of New Zealand’s oldest ski areas and a legendary destination often regarded as a rite of passage for backcountry enthusiasts. Access is unlike any other ski field in the country—there’s no road in. Instead, visitors hike a steep track gaining 400 metres of elevation to reach the lodges, a journey that takes around 40 minutes to an hour. A goods lift transports equipment directly to the lodge, leaving people free to make the climb. Please note there is no gear hire on the mountain.

Good for:

  • Great back country skiing powered by rope tows and the iconic Kiwi nutcrackers
  • Vast areas of ungroomed terrain spread across multiple ridges and basins, featuring steep, technical lines
  • Authentic alpine experience with the option to stay on the mountain in the fully catered lodge.

  • Temple Basin is located 2 hours 20 mins west of Christchurch.

Broken River

Broken River is a club ski field open to the public and club members. It is home to some of New Zealand's best off-piste skiing and snow boarding with sheltered and varied terrain for all levels. Broken River has a great family friendly and welcoming atmosphere, kitchen and BBQ facilities available for use at Palmer Lodge. Please note there is no gear hire on the mountain.

Good for:

  • On mountain accommodation - 10 minutes walk from the slope
  • Awesome for telemark skiers
  • Night skiing under lights and starry skies.

Mt Olympus

Mt Olympus is a remote, club‑run ski field tucked into the Craigieburn Range, celebrated for its big‑mountain freeride terrain, classic nutcracker tows, and a lodge culture that feels like a tight‑knit alpine community. Mt Olympus is a groomer-free zone with off-piste riding. There are no gear hire facilities on the mountain.

The mountain’s ski‑in/ski‑out lodge is the heart of the experience with ski weeks on offer.

Good for:

  • 80 hectares of skiable terrain, with 10% beginner, 55% intermediate and 35% advanced
  • The top hut accommodates up to 52 overnight guests in 6 bunkrooms
  • A hot tub overlooking the basin.

Located 1.5–2 hours from Christchurch, Mt Olympus sits deep in the Southern Alps in a high, south‑facing basin at the southern end of the Craigieburn Range.

Craigieburn Valley

Suited to intermediate to advanced skiers and boarders, the terrain at Craigieburn Valley is varied, exciting and challenging. Three high capacity rope tows service a vertical rise of 500m. Please note there are no ski hire facilities on the mountain.

  • Slope-side accommodation with a great social atmosphere
  • Awesome steeps, chutes and powder bowl skiing
  • If you're an expert rider then The Big One is for you!
