Ōtautahi Christchurch’s Show Weekend, is an iconic long weekend of fun and festivities. A tradition that has been loved by locals and visitors alike for generations.

This action-packed itinerary will guide you through how to spend your time in Christchurch over this iconic weekend. Be part of the festivities and see why Show Weekend is highlight for many on the annual event calendar.

Day 1 - arrival and evening delights

Arrive in Christchurch and check-in to your accommodation. There are options galore throughout the city, so check out where you could be resting your weary head each night after a long day of activities.

Start your Show Weekend adventure by strolling through the lush Christchurch Botanic Gardens, located in Hagley Park. Take in the vibrant spring blooms (it’s rhododendron season) by foot or book a punt and glide along the river to really take in the flowers and the city. The Christchurch Trams are another great way to see the sites of Ōtautahi, combining history and sightseeing! The knowledgeable drivers will keep you informed on sites around the city with live commentary.

For a taste of local cuisine, head to The Tannery just outside of the city – a restored historic building filled with boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants

Day 2 – it’s show time

It's Show Day! Grab something for breaky from one of the many stalls at Riverside Market where you will be spoilt for choice – from freshly baked goods to smoothies and juices. Then it’s time to make your way to the Canterbury Agricultural Park, where The Royal A&P Show takes place - trust us, you’ll want to get there early so you have time to fit everything in! This iconic event is a showcase of New Zealand's agricultural heritage and culture. Explore the trade stalls, indulge in delicious food, go on carnival rides, and watch thrilling equestrian and woodchopping events and livestock competitions.

After a day of excitement at the Show, treat yourself to a leisurely evening at one of Christchurch's many excellent restaurants on The Terrace. Whether you're in the mood for fresh seafood, a gourmet burger, or international cuisine, you'll find an array of options to satisfy your cravings in this incredible hospitality spot.

Day 3 - suit up for the races

Get dressed up fancy and head to Delilah for a pre-race brunch, complete with signature cocktails.

After brunch settle in for a day at the races. Enjoy the thrilling New Zealand Cup and Al Basti Equiworld 2000 Guineas Day at Riccarton Park, featuring horse racing, fashion, and fun. The atmosphere is always electric, and spirits are high at this annual event.

Head back into town afterwards to continue the good times, the city centre will be alive with people out and about having a great time after the races. Make sure to end the night at the Christchurch Casino where you can continue your winning streak from the day!

Day 4 - until next time

Take a leisurely morning walk down Cashel Street and The Crossing in the city centre where you can browse the boutiques for souvenirs and local crafts, or shop in the many fashion stores until your heart’s content.

Once you have shopped up a storm, head to the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, home to one of New Zealand’s most important public art collections. Entry is free and will gain you access to the ever-changing exhibitions and displays. Don’t forget to check out the Design Store where you can pick up thoughtful gifts inspired by the gallery’s collection. Before departing Christchurch, be sure to grab a cup of locally roasted coffee to fuel your journey home – you are spoilt for choice!

Then it’s time to head out after a glorious long weekend in Ōtautahi Christchurch – once home, let the planning for next year begin!
