Whether you have an hour or a whole afternoon, here are five uniquely Christchurch, kid-friendly adventures to add to your autumn bucket list.
Kayak on the Avon River through the autumn trees
There’s no better way to soak up the seasonal beauty than a gentle kayak trip down the Ōtākaro Avon River.
Gliding under the canopy of turning trees in the city centre offers a peaceful, picturesque perspective that you simply can’t get from the footpaths.
It’s a quiet, scenic, and active way to enjoy the crisp autumn air together.

Tip: rent your kayak or paddle boat directly from the historic Antigua Boat Sheds. Their central location makes it easy to combine a paddle with a stroll through the nearby Botanic Gardens.
Walk among giants at Riccarton Bush
Step back in time at Pūtaringamotu (Riccarton Bush). This remnant of ancient kahikatea forest is home to trees that are up to 600 years old.
With flat, recently renovated pathways, it’s an accessible and free sanctuary perfect for little legs.
It’s a fantastic way to teach kids about New Zealand's natural history in an immersive, magical setting.
Location: 16 Kahu Road, Fendalton.
Tip: the grounds are open from early until dusk. While dogs are allowed on the park grounds, they are strictly prohibited inside the bush to protect the local wildlife.
Hand feed the deer at Willowbank
Autumn is a wonderful time to visit our local wildlife attractions while the weather is still mild.
At Willowbank Wildlife Reserve children can hand feed many of the animals, including the deer.
It’s a fantastic, hands-on way for children to get close to both native New Zealand species and exotic animals.
Location: 60 Hussey Road, Northwood.
Tip: check out the nocturnal kiwi house — it's a guaranteed highlight!
Jump into fighter jets at the Air Force Museum
Need to escape a chilly or drizzly afternoon? Head to the Air Force Museum of New Zealand in Wigram.
It’s completely free, indoor, and packed with real aircrafts that will spark any child’s imagination.
Kids can explore interactive exhibits, view historic planes up close, and get a feel for aviation history in a space designed to be engaging for all ages.
