Explore the history of Christchurch

The Transitional Cardboard Cathedral, opened in 2013, is one of Christchurch’s most interesting architectural projects. Designed by Shigeru Ban in partnership with local firm Warren and Mahoney, the building is constructed from 98 cardboard tubes supported by timber and steel.

Originally intended as a temporary worship space while the Christ Church Cathedral was repaired, it has since become a long‑term home for the Anglican community—and a striking city landmark. It also holds a unique claim to fame it is the only cathedral in the world made from cardboard.

While exploring Cashel Street, the Bridge of Remembrance is another must‑see. Built to honour those who served in both world wars, the memorial’s grand archway makes it an unforgettable feature of the cityscape.
