Kōwhai Park solar array powers Christchurch's cleantech future
The opening of Kōwhai Park solar array at Christchurch Airport strengthens Christchurch's position as a national cleantech hub, delivering renewable energy, supporting industry electrification and fuelling sustainable economic growth.
The renewable energy infrastructure powering Christchurch's cleantech future
The opening of Kōwhai Park solar array at Christchurch Airport marks another significant milestone in Christchurch's emergence as a national centre for cleantech innovation and renewable energy.
The $273 million development that was officially opened in October 2026 adds 150MW of renewable generation capacity to New Zealand's electricity system, with around 300,000 solar panels expected to generate enough electricity to match the annual demand of approximately 36,000 homes.
Kōwhai Park marks a new milestone for renewable energy
Located on 230 hectares of airport land, the project is one of the largest renewable energy investments ever undertaken in Canterbury and signals growing confidence in Christchurch as a place where ambitious sustainability projects can be developed and delivered.
The solar farm was developed through a joint venture between Contact Energy and Lightsource bp and is expected to generate 275GWh of renewable electricity each year.
More than a solar farm: a vision for a renewable energy precinct
Importantly, that energy will support the electrification of New Zealand industry. Both Christchurch Airport and Synlait have signed long-term agreements to purchase electricity generated at Kōwhai Park, helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels while strengthening energy security.
For Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson, the project has always represented something bigger than solar generation alone.
"Kōwhai Park shows what can happen when you think differently about how airport land can be used. For us, this has always been about more than a solar farm. Our vision for Kōwhai Park is to create a renewable energy precinct that can support new opportunities and deliver long-term value for our region."Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson
Renewable energy powering industry and decarbonisation
That vision aligns closely with Christchurch's growing reputation as a hub for innovation in renewable energy and emerging technologies.
The city is home to a growing cluster of companies working in clean energy, hydrogen, aerospace, advanced materials and sustainable manufacturing, supported by research institutions, specialised infrastructure and a strong track record of collaboration between industry, government and academia.
Many of these companies rely on access to abundant, reliable renewable energy to develop, test and scale their technologies.
The infrastructure behind Christchurch's cleantech ecosystem
General Manager ‑ Innovation & Business Growth at ChristchurchNZ Martin Cudd says Kōwhai Park demonstrates the scale of opportunity emerging in the city's rapidly expanding cleantech sector.
"Developments like Kōwhai Park show what Christchurch does well. We bring together innovative businesses, research capability, infrastructure and strong partnerships to turn big ideas into reality.
"Cleantech is becoming one of Christchurch's defining strengths. We're seeing companies develop solutions in renewable energy, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, carbon reduction and now large-scale energy generation. Kōwhai Park is another example of that momentum."ChristchurchNZ General Manager ‑ Innovation & Business Growth, Martin Cudd
Investing in Christchurch's economic future
The construction of Kōwhai Park also delivered significant economic benefits to the region, employing 235 people at peak construction and involving 66 Canterbury businesses.
Martin Cudd says the project reflects a broader shift underway in Christchurch's economy.
"As cities around the world look for ways to decarbonise and build more resilient economies, Christchurch is developing real capability in the technologies that will help make that happen.
"Kōwhai Park isn't just an investment in renewable energy. It's an investment in Christchurch's future as a city where innovation, sustainability and economic growth go hand in hand."
