Learn about the Ōtautahi sites of the Tohu Whenua initiative and discover how stories and places help build our understanding of the past.
Free event
Let Tohu Whenua Project Manager, Jake Thomas introduce you to the amazing sites of the Waitaha Canterbury region chosen to help tell the tales of Aotearoa New Zealand’s past. Through a candid presentation at Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House, discover how the Tohu Whenua initiative chooses the sites that connect visitors to the unique stories and places of New Zealand; and learn about the challenges and triumphs of building new networks to link us all.
Waitaha Canterbury is the newest region to join the Tohu Whenua initiative, with significant Ōtautahi Christchurch sites like Te Whare Waitutuutu Kate Sheppard House, Pūtaringamotu Riccarton House and Bush, and Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre added to connect the histories and places that built our city today.
Tohu Whenua is a partnership between the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Department of Conversation and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga. The program currently operates in three regions (Otago, Te Tai Tokerau Northland, and Te Tai Poutini West Coast). Sites within the Waitaha Canterbury area were announced as the fourth region in June 2025.
