Best scones in Ōtautahi Christchurch
Our list of the best scones.

The search for the best scones
Sweet, or savoury, buttery soft with a golden crunch. A good cafe scone is highly coveted in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
Here’s a list of scones you can’t pass up when venturing out for your next caffeine hit.

Fika Coffee
One of the newer kids on the block, Fika Coffee on Cashel Street, has you more than covered in the scone department. They take the traditional scone up a level, adding flavours to spice (literally) things up a bit – jalapeno, pesto, and kimchi are some of their best savoury options, while their blueberry scone is simply delightful on the sweeter side of things.
Addington Coffee Co-op
Lincoln Road is a hub of many hidden gems including the date scone at Addington Coffee Co-Op. This is a classic with a twist. This scone is an unexpected, sweet treat. It's more like a scrumptious sandwich – the date mix is between two scone pieces, all topped with raw sugar. Honestly, you’ve just got to try it! During your visit, check out The Addington Store, which stocks ethical, local and eco friendly goods.

Niche Coffee + Eatery
If you’re one to avoid gluten, you don’t need to travel far to get a flour free cheesy delight. Sumner’s Niche Café is well loved by seaside locals and visitors alike. This classic cheese scone is served toasty warm with a crunch, but soft and bouncy in the centre.
The Shroom Room
Hipster or grandma's kitchen? Either way we’re here for it. These sweet date and vanilla scones are a hidden gem of Lyttelton that will take you back in time to baking with family. The Shroom Room's dense and rustic scones are served with icing sugar dust on top and toasted beautifully so that every inch of buttery goodness tastes as good as the first bite.

Foundation Café
A scone so good you’ll be tempted to pass it off as your own homemade creation. Foundation Cafe sits on the ground floor of Tūranga, and is a lovely place to relax for those in need of a refuel after browsing their next read. These incredibly light and fluffy scones are a bit famous in the central city, and the recipe is handed down to the café chefs and bakers who make about 200 of these cheesy scones daily.
Unknown Chapter
This scone recipe comes from the cookbook of the owner's mother. Served heated and crunchy with butter, this cheesy scone is generously sized and comes with a side of greens and a cheesy wafer. DE-LISH. Well known as a Sunday brunch go-to spot, Unknown Chapter also roast their own coffee beans. Be sure to book in advance or, at the very least, get a scone and coffee to go!

Akin
Akin Café on High Street in central Christchurch offers a refined, minimalist setting where their cabinet features both sweet and savoury scones. A popular pick is their chilli cheese scone, which you can enjoy toasted – the butter comes in a side dish so you can spread it on to your liking. Their Devonshire cream scone with raspberry coulis or kaya jam has to be the standout, though. It’s crispy, fluffy, sweet, tangy and creamy all at once.
Noki Cafe
Noki Cafe in Merivale is a Korean-inspired brunch hot spot that serves up outrageously good food. Their kimchi cheese scone is popular with the locals, with a bold yet balanced mix of soft cheese and gently fermented kimchi.
Cocoa Black
Cocoa Black has six locations across town and is well known for its cheese scones. Made with three types of cheese and a hint of cayenne, they’re baked fresh daily and hugely popular. Rich, savoury, and perfectly balanced, they’re a local favourite and a must-try for scone lovers. Top tip – ask for it toasted to make it crispy!
