The 136km West Coast Wilderness Trail showcases some of New Zealand’s most rugged and untamed landscapes from the old gold mining town of Ross to the port town of Greymouth. Ride through ancient rainforests, along glacial rivers and across wetlands, featuring stunning panoramas of the Southern Alps and glimpses of the Tasman Sea. Retrace old packhorse tracks, water races, tram lines and historic bridges as you journey back in time to the days of the Maori pounamu (greenstone) gatherers and the gold rush era. There’s plenty to do and see both on and off the bike. Stop off at the Treetop Walkway, enjoy a seafood Pizza in Hokitika, or experience the World Class TranzAlpine train journey from Greymouth to Christchurch.
