9 October 2022 - Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour has a rich Antarctic history with Scott and Shackleton departing the Port on three separate voyages during the 'heroic era'.

This Antarctic Port oozes with nostalgia from over 100 years ago when it supported historic expeditions to the ice-covered continent. The voyages continue today with ice breakers, tourism and fishing vessels all sailing south.

Our 3.5 km guided walk starts at Albion Square, highlights the proposed Te Ūaka The Lyttelton Museum, ambles down to the No 2 wharf to visit Tug Lyttelton, discusses contemporary Antarctic shipping and takes in the iconic Dry Dock.

The Canterbury Branch of the NZ Antarctic Society and Te Ūaka The Lyttelton Museum are collaborating to share with you what makes Christchurch and Lyttelton an Antarctic Gateway City.

If raining, check on Facebook and our website for postponement details.

See the curated pop-up exhibition, LocalEyes on Antarctica, at the Te Ūaka The Lyttelton Museum cabin, 33–35 London Street, on our website and What’s On.
