ChristchurchNZ Welcomes

Anna Fawcett

Q & A with Anna Fawcett

New General Manager of Marketing, Brand and Communications at ChristchurchNZ

ChristchurchNZ is delighted to welcome Anna Fawcett as our new General Manager of Marketing, Brand and Communications.

Anna Fawcett spent the past 7 months managing the marketing for Wellington’s CubaDupa and NZ Fringe Festivals. Prior to this Anna spent a number of years in the UK in senior roles with Festivals Edinburgh, VisitBritain and most recently Topdeck Travel as Global Head of Marketing. There Anna led the transformation of their brand and built a global marketing team.

Alongside experience in tourism, economic development and entertainment sectors across the globe, Anna holds three degrees – most notably an MSc in International Marketing from Edinburgh Napier University, for which her thesis won the University Medal.

We caught up with Anna ahead of her start date at ChristchurchNZ to pick her brain on all things Ōtautahi.

How are you feeling about moving to Ōtautahi Christchurch?

Both excited and curious. I love being in a new place and getting to know its stories and its people.

I have been away from New Zealand for almost a decade and Ōtautahi Christchurch has changed drastically. Moving here feels like an incredible opportunity to rediscover a part of my homeland and I can’t wait to explore the nooks and crannies, and experience what Ōtautahi Christchurch has to offer.

What do you know about Ōtautahi Christchurch? What have you heard?

I believe that Christchurch is a multifaceted place full of potential. It’s a place to explore, to get amongst nature, take in a show or some art, and enjoy local food and drink. It’s also a budding innovation hub which is getting some interesting international attention and that excites me greatly.

How do you think your work experience will translate to your job at ChristchurchNZ?

I am a career marketer with over myriad experiences in strategic and tactical marketing and communications, predominantly in senior Tourism & Economic Development roles. I feel that this role directly reflects a number of my previous roles, for example Marcomms Director North America at VisitBritain. I think this will translate very well.

With my previous global remit and international experience I’m confident I can bring new perspectives and learnings from some of the biggest and best players from around the world, and put these to good use here in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Outside of event and destination marketing, how will your experience benefit our business community?

Alongside my years of event and destination marketing I also held senior leadership positions in multimillion-dollar commercial businesses. I was Head of Global Marketing for Topdeck Travel, so I keenly understand the pressure of commercial business.

Marketing needs to have customer focussed, data-driven strategies and results as well as measurable ROI, which is how I operate.

I’ve also sat on boards representing businesses within the community with a strong focus on lobbying to change policy and/or local government to support those businesses and their growth.

I’m sure my commercial understanding will ensure our business community is supported and benefitted by our marketing, as well as assisting local and national agencies to make collaborative ‘best for city’ decisions.

What are your dreams for Ōtautahi Christchurch?

I could speak for hours on this! I was initially attracted to this role and to Ōtautahi Christchurch after reading the extraordinary vision that has been laid out along with the ‘bold ambition’ to imagine and strive for creating new and better economic opportunities for the city and its people.

My dream for Ōtautahi Christchurch is to achieve its potential as the most liveable city in NZ, whilst taking on the world in the realms of business, innovation, investment, sport, culture and tourism.

I want to see youth in Ōtautahi Christchurch have the best opportunities, not only in New Zealand, but in the world.

For those moving here, I want them to find the quality of life expected of the Kiwi dream while living in a globally relevant city. I truly believe Ōtautahi Christchurch can do and be all of these things.

How do you spend your free time?

I’m a music buff and most of my spare time is spent travelling the world for concerts and festivals – at least that was the case before Covid. However, I already have a concert booked for every weekend of my first month in the city! I also love live performances of any kind – comedy, theatre, opera, dance, etc.

I grew up on a farm so being active and exploring nature is always something I’ve craved, which makes me excited for the new landscapes at my fingertips in Christchurch. I like to think I’ll be exploring many of the region’s wineries in my spare time.

And while it’s been a while since I played, with the right sort of arm twisting I may consider joining a local netball or volleyball team.
