Magic on the Plains and Beyond

Famed for its ski experiences, Mid Canterbury also has a diverse range of activities to enjoy year-round. Choose from white-water rafting, skydiving, golfing, visiting gardens of blazing blooms, uncovering relics of aviation and transport history, hiking or mountain biking, nature trails or experiencing traditional rural hospitality.

Day 1 - Rakaia River & Terrace Downs Golf Resort

Less than an hour from Christchurch, enjoy an adrenalin pumping experience you'll never forget with a Discovery Jet boat ride down the spectacular Rakaia River. Hold on tight and soak in the dramatic landscape including views of the Southern Alps.

Then travel to Terrace Downs Golf Resort, a unique New Zealand destination with panoramic views of Mount Hutt. Enjoy lunch at Tilley's Bar & Brassiere/Cafe before trying your hand at a round of golf - only one of the many activities on offer. Try clay pigeon shooting or archery, enjoy a horse trek, hunting, fishing, or a relaxing massage at the day spa.

Day 2 - Methven

The ultimate way to experience this area is from the sky, so take off with Ballooning Canterbury for a magical morning.

Visit the Methven Art Gallery featuring monthly exhibits ranging from traditional landscapes to sculpture, wood carving, photography, glass, ceramics, jewellery and much more.

There's a range of fantastic accommodation in Methven and any of the choices add to your high country experience:

Grab a bite at Methven's iconic Blue Pub where you can enjoy a cold beer outside in the sun, enjoy a casual meal in the bar watching your favourite game, or sit down to a more classy evening the Blue Pub's renovated restaurant.

Day 3 - Mount Hutt

No trip to Methven is complete without a visit to Mount Hutt. Before departing though, enjoy breakfast at Primo E Secundo, with delicious food and a warm welcome. Browse through their treasure trove of retro memorabilia before hitting the road.

Mount Hutt is New Zealand's most awarded ski resort area and winter means some epic skiing and snowboarding is to be had. If that's not your cup of tea, just take the kids up for some tobogganing or sightseeing and enjoy a mulled wine by the fire in their cafe. The mountain road is public access but check conditions before you travel in case chains are needed. If you don't want to drive, check out the range of shuttle options here.

All the gear you need can be rented on the mountain along with ski or snowboard lessons. Otherwise check out local hire shops in the area.

If you've visiting in Summer, Mount Hutt offers some incredible downhill mountain biking trails. Take the hassle out of transport and get up the mountain with Hutt Shuttles.
