Explore Your Place with Madlen from Universo

Owner Madlen Shaw shares some ideas on how we can support local businesses and her fave central city spots.

Tell me about Universo

Universo is your little bit of everything! Located in the Christchurch Art Gallery we are a casual dining cafe with a bit of Euro-chic flair. We offer a smart casual dining experience during the day and into the evening, with friendly service and a great food offering, all sourced from local suppliers.

We are the perfect stop for a great coffee, a perfectly cooked meal or a drink.

What do you love about Ōtautahi Christchurch?

The people are friendly, it’s the garden city with great walks around town and up on the Port Hills. The central city has a great new atmosphere and exciting things popping up all the time, like the Riverside Market.

What is your view on why supporting local businesses matters right now?

Christchurch has been hit hard in the past decade. From earthquakes to the Mosque attacks and now COVID-19. We were well on the road to recovery but to continue in that recovery we need people to keep buying and supporting local.

How do you suggest people support local businesses?

Go out! Reduce online shopping, cancel the food bag or other online platform and go out for coffees, snacks, brunch or dinner.

Invite your friends from other regions here for the weekend - show them what makes Ōtautahi Christchurch so special!

School holidays are also a great time to explore a local attraction and do something different with the kids.

Which local Christchurch businesses would you like to give a shout out to?

I love Cluck Cluck Slurp in Riverside! To be fair every business needs a shout out for getting through this tough time and being resilient enough to keep going.

ChristchurchNZ’s Explore Your Place campaign encourages locals to support their city and region, its businesses and ultimately save jobs.
