It's Wine O'clock Somewhere
There's nothing quite like the feeling when you hear the clinking of a wine glass and someone saying “it’s wine o’clock somewhere in the world!”.
The North Canterbury Wine Region is one of the best places for you to embrace this. Plus, being only 40 minutes north of Christchurch, it's easy to access by car, or better still by bus.
The Waipara and Omihi Valleys are incredibly sheltered, which makes them ideal to grow wine and protect those delicate vines. It also means that it's always a few degrees warmer, which is perfect when you want to sit outside to enjoy award winning wines!
Here are some of our top picks for the best North Canterbury Wine O’clock locations.
If you are all about being close to the source when it comes to what you eat and drink, then Black Estate is the place for you. An ever changing seasonal menu compliments their wine selection and the view from the “barn” style cellar door and restaurant is simply breath-taking… you truly can’t get much closer to those delicious grapes!
Get on yer’ bike and head to Greystone Wines. Apart from the award winning wines (you have to try their Pinot Noir!) that you can sample from the cellar door and enjoy while there, they have a small bike trail running through the vines so take a picnic and really make a day of it.
Fiddler’s Green is a hidden gem at the heart of Waipara Valley. They offer a cellar door for local vineyards without one, while also running tastings of their own varieties. Their bistro serves some of the best dishes in the valley, and their impressive outdoor area will keep the kids entertained for hours.
Pegasus Bay Winery
Grab your besties and head to Pegasus Bay on one of those stunning blue sky Canterbury days. The wine is incredible, and they have been awarded best NZ Winery Restaurant six times! Take your time and enjoy their cellar door and a stroll around the manicured gardens too.
For a unique experience try Pyramid Valley. Their cellar door is an old 1920’s stable, refurbished into a quaint but stylish area to taste their biodynamic wines. You can enjoy the wine tasting, create your own picnic from products made onsite, or enjoy a full tour of the vineyard and winery.
The building is impressive, and so is the wine! Waipara Hills is a popular location for a quick stop since it's right on the main highway, but it should be considered a destination in its own right. Mouth-watering food, delicious wine and a stunning outdoor courtyard to lay back, relax and take it all in.
