Where Is Lyttelton?
Lyttelton is a 20-minute drive from Christchurch and is the oldest settlement on Banks Peninsula. The historic town has many hidden gems to discover: Timeball Station, Grubbs Cottage or the Lyttelton Gaol, explore more.
The town overlooks the Port and is a great place to start exploring the surroundings. There is a ferry service across the harbour to Diamond Harbour, a seaside village. Over summer a boat tour service operates to Quail Island, a former Quarantine Station with Antarctic links which today is a restoration project reintroducing forest and birds.
Numerous walks in and around Lyttelton will lead you to the hidden bays further along the coast or up the Port Hills. From the top you have a breath-taking view over Christchurch, Lyttelton Harbour and the Southern Alps.
Where Can I Get Local Information From?
Lyttelton has a community based Information Centre which opens daily (Monday – Sunday 10am – 3pm).
Can I Walk On And Off The Ship?
No. Access to and from the wharf is by bus or other transport. Before the new wharf opened in 2022, there was walking access to and from ships.
Once in Lyttelton, facilities are all in walking distance (bakery, supermarket, pharmacy/post office, ATMs, cafe/bars and restaurants, shops, public bus stop).
Health And Safety?
Like visiting any country it is advisable to be sensible with your belongings – don’t leave valuables on display or unattended, and always lock your vehicle. The Lyttelton Police Station is located at 5 Sumner Road. In the event of a serious emergency call 111.
For medical attention contact the Lyttelton Health Centre - open Monday to Friday (hours vary daily).

No. Tipping is not expected or required anywhere in New Zealand. All prices already include the 15% Goods and Services Tax (GST).
