Why I Love the Central City

Maddy Mortiaux, Bailey Nelson

Want to make a statement? Then Bailey Nelson is the place to go to get your style groove on! We caught up with Maddy Mortiaux from Bailey Nelson to chat about working in the CBD.

How long have you operated in the central city?

Bailey Nelson has been operating in the central city for coming up a year now. How time has flown!

I've only just moved back down after spending a few years in Auckland running the New Zealand company. I absolutely LOVE Christchurch (born and bred Cantabrian) and couldn't be happier with the move. I'm still discovering all of the changes and new and exciting things the city has to offer.

Are you doing anything this winter to attract more business?

We offer free eye tests all year round! We would like to give all New Zealanders (and travellers) the chance at a free eye test (including a comprehensive health check of the eye) - as they are such an important part of our body! We currently have our mid-winter sale on too! We love to jump onboard with exciting things happening in the city to support the community.

What is your go-to lunch spot?

Definitely New York Deli - I missed these guys when I was in Auckland- now it's my local.

Where in the city do you live?

I live in Halswell. I love a bit of the city life but also like the view of the mountains!

Tell us what your ideal day out in the city looks like?

Going for a morning run around Hagley Park, then hitting-up a cafe in the central city! I love to hang out in Scorpio Books and then go shopping at some of the awesome stores down High Street. Hitting the the local new bars in the evening and Little High is also a bonus!

What is your best kept central-city secret?

I love going to get my Posh Porridge and coffee fix every Wednesday or Thursday morning.

What sets Christchurch central city apart from other places?

There is a unique vibe in the central city - a sort of creative entrepreneurialism that you want to be a part of! It's like you have to seek out the little awesome coffee shops, local murals, cocktail bars and when you do, you aren't disappointed!

Everyone is lovely and relaxed too, there are so many times I just end up talking to random people about real life things! The creative art scene is awesome! The City is so active! Things are expanding and exciting!

What is your favourite central city spot during winter?

It's basically my favourite cafe in New Zealand - Unknown Chapter. I love taking my family and friends there for breakfast or hitting up GIN GIN bar in Victoria Street.

Can you sum up the central city up in one word?

What would you say to someone who says there is nothing to do in the central city?

I'd say they don't know Christchurch! There's always something to find and do! You just have to look.

Can you finish this sentence: ’I love Christchurch central city because…

... it's unique, creative, ever-changing, and I seriously believe it will become one of the best cities in the world to live in!”
