Christchurch

Christchurch is the perfect location to capture the best of the alps to the ocean as well classic seasonal shots. Daniel Murray shares some of his favourite photo locations in the city.

New Brighton Pier

The New Brighton Pier is a Christchurch icon and a hot spot for those wanting to fish, surf or simply breathe in the fresh ocean air!

New Brighton Pier

Where to get the shot

The New Brighton Pier is in New Brighton, Christchurch. (Note: the pier is currently undergoing repairs and is not expected to be fully open until mid-2018).

Setting up the shot

Since opening in November 1997, the New Brighton Pier has been a magnet for photographers. It’s easy to see why! Early risers will capture the magic of the sun rising over the Pacific Ocean, or compose a shot using the pier’s strong leading lines reaching into the sea.

The Groynes

The Groynes is a large recreational area, perfect for capturing the changing of the leaves in autumn!

The Groynes

Where to get the shot

The Groynes is a recreational area 9 km north-west of the Christchurch city centre. A major feature of The Groynes are the lakes and waterways throughout.

Setting up the shot

Autumn is the time to shine with soft light, golden hues and great warm images!

The Groynes is the perfect location to capture autumn happiness due to the presence of many large deciduous trees and several reflective ponds and waterways. This image incorporated kayaks, with the red and yellow complimenting the autumn colours and the surrounds.

Botanic Gardens

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are a must do when visiting the city. The gardens are ideal for photographers wanting to capture autumn colours and spring blooms.

Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Where to get the shot

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens sprawl across 21 hectares of central Christchurch. Public parking is available in several places in the area, the largest of which is located off Park Terrace at the western end of Armagh Street.

Setting up the shot

Frosty mornings add a magical element and interesting light to photos as the sun rises and begins to heat the ground creating misty conditions. The mist adds volume, light beams and a ‘3D’ like quality to images. With this shot in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, the couple walking their dog helps give a sense of scale to the surrounding trees.
