Arthur's Pass & Selwyn

'Sensational' is how we describe what's on offer in this area of 'middle earth' New Zealand. Experience Selwyn's scenery, ski fields, outdoor pursuits, gardens, food, wine and hospitality, and you'll soon agree that this word sums the region up nicely.

Selwyn reaches from the majestic Southern Alps and Arthur's Pass, down the braided Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers and over the patchwork Canterbury plains to the vast coastal lake of Lake Ellesmere.

Arthur's Pass National Park

Nature lovers, hikers and mountain climbers flock to Arthur's Pass National Park to discover the magnificent flora, fauna and vistas of the Southern Alps.

Spend some time in New Zealand's highest township, Arthur's Pass Village - the gateway to discovering this alluring mountainous area on foot. The scenic TranzAlpine train journey also stops here, en-route daily between Christchurch and Greymouth.

Lake Coleridge

For a high country escape, and some great fishing, head to the picturesque setting of Lake Coleridge. Lake Coleridge is New Zealand's first hydro lake and a famed fishing lake. From here you can explore the high country. You'll find everything from skiing, horse treks, farm tours and quad biking to high country garden tours and golf, including the challenge of no. 10 at Terrace Downs High Country Resort.

Exploring Selwyn

Walking is a great way to explore all the corners of this stunning region. Or you can hop on a mountain bike, there are plenty of trails for the daring, alongside gentler options for those seeking a leisurely ride. Alternatively, canter through the backcountry on horseback or dart through jagged gorges by jet boat.

Castle Hill bouldering and rock climbing

If rock-based quests call your name, head to Castle Hill - renowned as one of the world's best spots for bouldering and rock climbing. Or take things at a more sedate pace, and hit the fairways at a high country resort or country golf course.

Ski the Selwyn Six

When winter hits, skiers and boarders are drawn to the 'Selwyn Six' - 6 ski fields that cater to snow buffs of all abilities. Discover the family-friendly fields of Porters and Mt Cheeseman, off-piste action at Craigieburn, Broken River, and Mount Olympus, and a top-of-the world snow encounter at Temple Basin.

As well as world-class skiing and snowboarding, you'll find each of these areas has its own unique culture, making a day on the slopes in Selwyn a truly unique experience.

Sensational gardens

Beautiful gardens - and the passionate people who tend to them - are also a big draw card to this region. Enjoy the peace and splendour of gardens of national and historic significance, impressive high country estates, and seasonal and country lifestyle gardens.

Local gardeners love the opportunity to share their charming plots, knowledge, stories and ardour for all things botanic.

Selwyn Food & Wine Trail

Savouring local food and wine is a must-do while you're here. Check out a country store bursting with local edibles, try a local vintage at a winery, or give your palate a workout and meet passionate artisan producers at a weekend farmers' market. Berries, cheeses, walnuts, hazelnuts, pork, mushrooms and lamb are just some of the local specialties on offer.

Selwyn Food & Wine Trail lets you plan your own trail of this region's gastronomic goodness
