Things to do in Christchurch that don't cost a thing!

Christchurch has a variety of activities in and around the city that are free to do and well worth your time! The city has easy access to the beach and the Port Hills, offering a great range of outdoor activities along with a decent hit of art and culture.

Here are our top picks...

Walk the Port Hills: There are a lot of different walks for every fitness level to explore the city`s surroundings and enjoy awesome views over the coast and the Southern Alps.

Walking in the city: Over summer there is a free guided city walking tour on, every day at 10am starting at the Chalice in Cathedral Square. The 2 hour guided walk will give you an excellent overview over the inner city.

Parks and Gardens: Christchurch is known as the Garden City and has over 800 gardens and parks to visit. Pack a picnic, put your walking shoes on and enjoy the colourful surroundings Christchurch has to offer.

Street Art and Gap Fillers: Christchurch`s inner city is full of street art and interesting sculptures. Check out this awesome street art map, to help guide you on your way. The Gap filler app will guide you through the inner city and give you information of what is going on at the moment.

Art and Culture: It doesn't need to cost a thing to embrace some heritage arts and culture in Christchurch when you explore the Canterbury Museum, Arts Centre, and the Christchurch Art Gallery.  Plus you can taste a slice of history at the Air Force Museum in Wigram.

Beaches: It can be easy to forget that Christchurch sits right on the coast, with a series of beaches at the doorstep.  So why not head along to the popular surf beaches of Sumner and Scarborough, or visit the iconic Christchurch Pier in New Brighton at sunrise for that stunning photo opportunity.

Riccarton Bush: One of Chirstchurch's little known secrets is Riccarton Bush, right in the heart of the city. It is the only area of native hardwood forest like Rimu and Kauri left in Christchurch.  If you visit on a Saturday morning, you can get the added benefit of the Farmers Market with all it's delicious sights and smells.
