Aigantighe Art Gallery

Aigantighe Art Museum is well-known for its unusual, dynamic and innovative programmes. It was founded in 1956 and holds the South Island's third-largest art museum collection. Its name is Scottish Gaelic for 'at home' and is pronounced 'egg and tie.'

Aigantighe holds Canterbury, other New Zealand, Pacific, Asian and European art works from the 16th century to the present day and its British Victorian painting collection is of great significance. Revolving exhibitions from the permanent collection are held in the House Gallery and regional, national and international exhibitions in the Main Gallery. Collaborations with overseas collectors have seen exciting exhibitions such as Swiss-Italian Impressionism (2004) and Fashion in the Style of Frida Kahlo (2006) and Dutch Art (2007). The sculpture garden by New Zealand, Japanese and African artists is always open. Unique school holiday events include Art Hunts, Art Car and historic painting dress-ups (a first for New Zealand) of those shown in artworks in the collection.

Kaikoura Ultimate

The Kaikoura town ship is located on a rocky peninsula, protruding from farmland beneath the mountains.

In the waters off the peninsula, a complex marine system provides an abundantly rich habitat for marine mammals and seabirds. Several different species of whale can be seen off Kaikoura at different times of the year, but almost always the huge sperm whales. The orca is often sighted in Kaikoura, and schools of pilot whales are occasional visitors. Dusky dolphins and fur seals are plentiful.
