Broken River Ski Field Road

Track distance: 6km (from picnic area to the hut)
Start location: Cragieburn Picnic Area

Key information:

  • Follows Cave Stream to Jacks Pass.
  • Steep and loose sections.
  • Ski basib can be accessed by bike.
  • Multi use track - follow mountain bikers code.

Broken River Ski Field Road to Camp Saddle

Track distance: 2.5km
Start location: Opposite the ski club tractor shed, beyond the locaked gate on Broken River Ski Field road

Key information:

  • Old 4WD track.
  • Climbs through beech forest.
  • Track arrives at open tussocks then poles mark the route to Camp Saddle.

Dracophyllum Flat track

Track distance: 1.8km
Start location: Take the road from the Craigieburn picnic area following Cave Stream to Broken River ski field road. The track begins opposite the road intersection.

Key information:

  • Pole Bridge is not suitable for bikes so riders will need to ford the river instead.
  • Cycle through mountain beech to a sheltered picnic area covered in red-brown Dracophyllum, native tussock, small herbs and ground-cover plants.

Hogs Back mountain bike track

Track distance: Castle Hill to Texas Flat 7.4km. Roundtrip via the Cheeseman ski field road 15.6km.
Start location: Behind Castle Hill Village or from Texas Flat

Key highlights:

  • Ascend through beech forest to the Long Spur ridgeline.
  • Cheeseman ski field access road.
  • Waterfall Creek crossing.

Track distance: 25km
Start location: Mt White Road (25km east of Arthur's Pass Village SH73)

Key highlights:

  • Broad sweeping views up the valley.
  • Traverse tussock flats boardering the Waimakariri River.

  • 4WD tracks.
  • Easy ride over river flats and through beech forest.
  • Two river crossings - Poulter River and Casey Stream.
  • To park boundary – grade 3 intermediate, beyond park boundary grade 2 easy

Starvation Gully to Trig M

Track distance: 3.2km
Start location: Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park

Key highlights:

  • Uphill marked track amongst diverse shrublands.
  • Traversing open ridges to reach Trig M.
  • About half way up, the track from Coach Stream joins this track from the southeast.
  • Grade 3 intermediate track.

Trig M to Coach Stream

Track distance: 5.5km
Start location: The Coach Stream route branches off 1.5km down from Trig M

Key highlights:

  • Travels alongside a ridge before reaching part of Ben More Station.
  • 4WD track heads back into public conservation land.
  • Follow SH73 over Porters Pass back to Starvation Gully (an additional 4.5km).
  • Greade 3 intermediate track.
