Pass through some of New Zealand's finest vineyards and historic farmland on this newly developed cycle trail. Choose from guided or self-guided options and enjoy cellar door wine tastings and dine on local produce at a leisurely pace.
The trail has been developed by the Hurunui Trails Trust as a way to encourage walking and biking in the area.
The trail itself is a mix of well-formed and well-signposted track and areas that are rocky, rough and not as well signposted in parts. There are also uphill sections that require some peddle power. Due to the variable nature of the track a mountain bike is strongly advised.
What you will experience
The trail is a great way to explore and sample the vineyards of Waipara by bike! Beginning at Glenmark Reserve sample the vintages of Atuahua Wines and Sherwood Estate.
The trail then passes underneath SH 1 taking in the vineyards of Greystone, Muddy Water, Dancing Water, Mountford Estate and Black Estate. Be sure to keep your eyes on the trail! It's easy to get distracted with breathtaking views out to the Main Divide.
Guided tour options
A guided tour is advised so wines can be enjoyed and to avoid having to double-back on the track to get back to the start. Natural High offer a comprehensive guided tour including tastings at up to 4 cellar doors. The tour includes a delicious platter lunch, coffee and cake at the duration of the ride along with bike hire and transport to and from Christchurch.
