Your Canterbury Adventures Await!

Everyone needs a little adventure in their lives. And you'll find adrenalin fixes everywhere in Canterbury, thanks to our diverse landscape and an outdoor-loving culture.

Whether you're a cautious adventurer, or you love to feel the fear and do it anyway, come and test your limits with some unique thrill-seeking in stunning surrounds.

Water adventure

Our waterways are positively picturesque, and there's plenty of adventure waiting for you within their inky depths. Hop into a kayak and circle turquoise lake waters, or explore our rugged coastlines and the magnificent wildlife in residence. Revel in the buzz and excitement of reeling in a big catch on a deep sea fishing trip off the coast of Kaikoura or Akaroa. If you like to take it to the limit, snake through Canterbury's rivers at speed on a jet boat ride or white-water rafting trip.

Land adventure

There are plenty of land-based challenges to take on. Explore Canterbury's high country trails, native bush and forest areas on a mountain bike, off-road motorcycle or quad bike. Let someone else do the driving while you take in the views on a 4WD adventure.

Air adventure

Got a head for heights? Get the ultimate view over Canterbury, and the ultimate rush, with a tandem skydive or a paragliding experience. Take off in a helicopter for prime sightseeing over our vast plains and the majestic Southern Alps, or soar high above it all in a hot air balloon.

Come and take on an aerial obstacle course in the tree canopy at Adrenalin Forest. Try the 7 courses starting from 1 metre off the ground up to 20 metres in the canopy, with each course featuring varying degrees of difficulty.

The Christchurch Adventure Park is the home for downhill mountain biking in Christchurch - offering a wealth of trails from beginners through to technical trails for expert riders. If you prefer your adventure seeking from the air, the park is home to New Zealand's longest and highest zipline at 150 metres high and 1.1 kilometres long.

Mid Canterbury

It's not just snow sports that draw people to Mid Canterbury. Explore this beautiful district where mountains meet lush countryside on a 4WD safari, or a nail-biting jet boat ride down the Rakaia River. Air-based thrills are on tap here – the question is, how daring are you?

Hanmer Springs & Hurunui

Don't let the serenity of Hanmer Spring's hot pools fool you, adventure lovers can also get their kicks around these parts. Not far from Hanmer Springs township you can hurl yourself off a historic bridge by bungy, go white water rafting, jet boating, horse trekking or quad bike riding. Mountain biking is also a popular here, with some challenging trails, and the challenge of keeping your eye on the track with spectacular scenery at every turn.

Aoraki / Mount Cook Mackenzie

If you're itching to go on a mountainous quest, head to the Aoraki / Mount Cook Mackenzie region. This place is a mountaineer's Mecca, with a plethora of climbs and guided ascents. For a less physically demanding view over the spectacular Southern Alps, board a scenic flight, or helicopter. Get up close and personal with the captivating, ever-changing ice environment of the Tasman Glacier. Glide across the glacier lake by boat, or take a helicopter to the alps to ski or snowboard their powdery slopes.
