Te Ana is the new Ngai Tahu Rock Art Centre that opened in
December 2010 in Timaru. The Centre was a $2million project to
educate visitors on the unique rock art that exists in South
Canterbury.
As has been said the rock art was the first art gallery in New
Zealand with the rock art up to 700 years old. In gaining an
understanding of the art you will gain an understanding of Ngai
Tahu heritage and culture.
Visitors to the centre will experience many interactive
exhibitions that will entertain and educate you.
The largest collection of actual rock art in the world is also
on display removed from the rock over 90 years ago and now returned
to the Aoraki region.
Te Ana is a significant cultural experience in the South Island,
which increases the visitors understanding of Ngai Tahu the major
Maori Tribe in the South Island.
