View Ashburtons commemorative
Tiger Moth, paying tribute to the instructors, students and the
DH82a Tiger Moth type, in which many of our wartime air crews
received their basic flying training.
The original wartime tarmac
outside the museum still features tie down rings used to secure up
to 50 Tiger Moths from Mid Canterbury's famous nor-west
winds.
Harvard NZ 1012, the museum's
first aircraft, provided pilots with 'advanced training' from the
early 1940's and was one of 202 Harvard's which saw service with
the RNZAF.
The De Havilland Devon provided
NZ military pilots and crew with multi-engine navigation and
communication training. One of 30 with the Royal New Zealand Air
Forces, NZ1829 has had a restful life with just 17.5 hours total
flying time by requirement.
