New Zealand Department of Conservation Outdoor Safety Code

When preparing for a walk, no matter how long, make sure you follow the Department of Conservation (DOC) Outdoor Safety Code to help you stay safe.

  1. Plan your trip
Ask locals about the walking track and how long you can reasonably expect it to take or visit the nearest DOC visitor centre for the latest information about facilities and conditions of DOC tracks.
  2. Tell someone
Tell someone your plans, especially if you’re heading out alone. Leave a time that you will be back.
  3. Be aware of the weather
New Zealand's weather can be highly unpredictable. Check the forecast and expect weather changes. Metservice.com is a good tool but also ask at your accommodation provider or the local DOC / i-SITE Visitor Centre.
  4. Know your limits
It's good to challenge yourself, but only within your physical limits and experience.
  5. Take sufficient supplies
Even if you're just going for a couple of hours, make sure you have enough food, clothing, equipment and emergency rations for the worst-case scenario. Take an appropriate means of communication.
