Rapaki Track Walk

Walking icon

Intensity: Walking track

Duration of walk: Roughly 2 hours return

How to get there: From the central city take Brougham Street towards Lyttelton, turn right onto Port Hills Road and then left onto Rapaki Road. Follow the road up, there is a small parking area just below the bottom gate (start of the track) but parking can be limited so it is often restricted to road parking which can get tight also.

Description of walk: The track is very popular with walkers, mountain bikers and the occasional 4WD. It starts at the top of Rapaki Road and is an easy path to follow to the summit. It is an open pathway and can be fairly sheltered or windy depending on the wind direction. Gradual climb with steeper sections. Rewarded with stunning Port Hills and then city, beach and ocean views. At the top of the track there is access to a number of walks to continue exploring the Port Hills.

Facilities available & Important information:

  • Toilets available at the corner of Rapaki Rd and Centaurus Rd
  • Occasional livestock (cows and/or sheep)
  • Dogs must be on a lead at all times

We got to a gate which was electronic with a sensor either side, is this the start of the walk?

It would be great to have a composting toilet near the top of Rapaki, as many runners, walkers and cyclists feel natures call after a brisk climb and are forced to imptovise on the trackside.
It would need to be a couple of hundred metres down from the road to reduce vandalism.
