Take a walk around the green jewel of the city - Hagley Park. Within a short distance of the city centre, you can stroll through forest and discover native bush and wetlands. Head up to Victoria Park in the Port Hills for fantastic views and short bush walks. For breathtaking coastal views, take a stroll along New Brighton Beach or the Sumner promenade.

When preparing for a walk, no matter how long, make sure you follow the Department of Conservation (DOC) Outdoor Safety Code to help you stay safe.

  1. Plan your trip

    Ask locals about the walking track and how long you can reasonably expect it to take or visit the nearest DOC visitor centre for the latest information about facilities and conditions of DOC tracks.

  2. Tell someone

    Tell someone your plans, especially if you’re heading out alone. Leave a time that you will be back.

  3. Be aware of the weather

    New Zealand's weather can be highly unpredictable. Check the forecast and expect weather changes. is a good tool but also ask at your accommodation provider or the local DOC / i-SITE Visitor Centre.

  4. Know your limits

    It's good to challenge yourself, but only within your physical limits and experience.

  5. Take sufficient supplies
