Yesterday, Sunday 27 September, it was United Nations World Tourism Day. To mark this day, Christchurch and the Canterbury region were chosen to represent New Zealand on a global scale.
helloworld Global Relay - #helloworldRELAY
A world first social media relay initiative captured the day sunrise to sunset. Australian-based travel group Helloworld created a relay for World Tourism Day using Instagram as the key social platform. The day started in Samoa, finishing 24 hours later in the Cook Islands. Partnering with over 60 countries and more than 75 Instagrammers, helloworld's Instagram relay captured countries, cities, people and places, through creative and inspiring images on the same date across the planet.
The Instagrammers were encouraged to push their own content to the helloworld website during the World Tourism Day event using the hashtag #helloworldRELAY. All the images with this tag are being gathered and will be used through the year. This will include sales, a photo essay and a short film that will give an overview of the day.
“It is fitting our region should be chosen to boost international tourism awareness and make social media history at the same time. Instagram is proving to be a powerful marketing tool and is the perfect real-time platform for inspiring travel.”Rowan Worner, GM Marketing, Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism
Sean Scott’s 12 hours in Canterbury
Australian photographer and social media influencer Sean Scott posted images of Christchurch and Canterbury to his 250,000 followers via Instagram, with a new photo posted every hour over the 12 hours of daylight.
Some of the highlights from Sean’s day in Canterbury:

I love New Zealand as a photographic destination because of the isolation and epic scenery. You really can explore for yourself and find yourself out in world class landscapes and be totally on your own. With some of the best cloud formations I have seen and the dramatic ever changing weather it really is a photographers dream. This is now my 8th trip in 3 years.Sean Scott, #helloworldRELAY Instagrammer
Sunset InstaMeet Ends the Day
Approximately 40 local photographers and fans of Instagram came to the top of the Christchurch Gondola to take part in an InstaMeet and then it turned out they also starred in Sean’s final photo of the relay. This was the second Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism organised InstaMeet where photography fans have come together to connect, explore, and celebrate their creativity.
Thanks to the team at Christchurch Gondola who gave the group the unique chance to capture the sunset over Banks Peninsula, the Southern Alps, Canterbury plains, the ocean and city.
When’s the Next InstaMeet?
We're excited to announce our next Canterbury InstaMeet taking place in Kaikoura, New Zealand's leading eco-tourism destination on Saturday 17 October. You'll see an amazing variety of marine and birdlife along its dramatic rugged coastline.
Come along to this free event and meet some of the world's most talented and inspiring Instagrammers. Aussie Instagrammers Lauren Bath, Jewelszee and Jarrad Seng will be there along with Young Adventuress, Bare Kiwi and the team from Stoked for Saturday.
