Limited budget? No worries. Explore Christchurch on the cheap.
Go to the museum
For a donation, you can visit the Canterbury Museum. The Museum houses more than 2.3 million treasures, with something new to discover every visit. There's even a Moa skeleton and the Tucker Sno-cat - an Antarctic vehicle in which scientists crossed the Antarctic continent for the first time. Now that's awesome!
Discover Christchurch’s arty side
Christchurch loves art, and there are so many art galleries to explore. The largest and most famous is the Christchurch Art Gallery – Te Puna o Waiwhetū. The gallery runs free late night tours on a Wednesday.
Trace protons and neutrons
Tucked away in the Clock Tower of the Arts Centre is Rutherfords Den. This interactive exhibition covers physics, chemistry and the life of nobel prize winner Ernest Rutherford who visited university here.
• Entry for adults $10, children (5-17 years old) $5, under 5 years old free
Putting in the city centre
Right in the heart of Christchurch is City Putt & Cruise, a mini golf course with a twist. The obstacles of the golf course are made of rescued building parts and memorabilia from the earthquakes.
• Entry for adults $10, children $7
A playground to remember
The Margaret Mahy playground is the largest playground of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. There are zip lines, slides, climbing towers - and of course an ice cream and coffee cart: remember, you are never too old for a swing or a whizz down a slide!
Take a stroll
Take a scenic stroll through town along the banks of the Avon River. The Antigua Boat Sheds is a popular photo stop and a great place to hire a kayak to explore the Avon through the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, if you no longer feel like walking.
Kayak hire: $12 per hour.
It's movie time
Feel like going to the movies? Alice Cinemas is a boutique cinema in the city centre, specialising in foreign films. The interior of the theatre is unique - think Alice in Wonderland. The cinema offers "Cheap Tuesday", with tickets $12 per adult and $11 for children.
Build up your fitness
Want to work on your summer body and like early starts? Then join the Hagley parkrun. Young and old meet at North Hagley Park every Saturday at 8am for a 5km fun run. It doesn't matter if you haven't been running before, everyone is welcome - no one will judge you!
Fight the aliens
Christchurch not only has lots of cool street art like graffiti, but also quirky sculptures and installations. One of our favourites is Super Street Arcade, the world’s first giant outdoor computer game. Get ready to play “Space Raiders” and save the Christchurch icons from an alien invasion!
Stroll the Arts Centre
The beautifully restored Boys High Building at the Arts Centre is home to shops that sell New Zealand made crafts and food. From homemade fudge to woven baskets and stylish stationery - the Arts Centre has it all. Disclaimer - you may end up spending more than $15 though! If you need any more inspiration on what to do and see in Christchurch, pop into the i-SITE. The team has a wealth of knowledge about the city. To finish off, visit Rollickin Gelato for a delicious scoop of Black Forest gelato.
