Winter Must Dos in Christchurch

Winter is coming, but that’s no reason to stay home and hibernate away from the world. There is still plenty to do and see to make the most of the frosty season.

Here are our top picks!

Head to the Botanic Gardens

Head to Cunningham House in the Botanic Gardens - this covered display house in the Gardens is always full of colour - even in winter!

Become a hot choc connoisseur

With so many cafes in the city - we are spoilt for choice when it comes to hot chocolates! Why not try some tasty treats - our favourites are from C1 and She Universe at the Tannery - YUM.

Enjoy Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights

Get amongst the festivities in Lyttelton on June 23 as London Street turns into a bustling market with different food stalls, music, mulled wine and cider.  Plus top of the evening with an epic firework display!

Fancy a show?

We are lucky to have a variety of theatre options in the city! Glam up to beat the winter blues. Our top picks are the Issac Theatre Royal and The Court Theatre. To discover what is on at The Court - click here.

Hike Mt Herbert

Mt Herbert is the highest point on Banks Peninsula that’s why there’s often a sprinkle of snow on top. The view over Lyttelton Harbour and the Port Hills with the Southern Alps standing proudly behind is an idyllic backdrop for photos and a stunning reward for the trek up.

Hang with Huskies

The International Antarctic Centre is the perfect spot to get your winter fix. From bouncing along on a Hagglund, patting the adorable huskies and let’s not forget learning about Antarctica - there is something for everyone at this 'cool' attraction (yes that was a Dad joke).

Try Ice Skating

Head to Alpine Ice to try your hand at ice skating or attempt a game of Ice Hockey! The New Zealand Ice Hockey League and our local Canterbury Red Devils  take over the ice some weekends - the games are fast, furious and packed with action!

Stargaze

Frosty mornings mean stunning clear nights, winter is one of the best times of the year to observe the stars. The view from the Godley Head Reserve or the Sugarloaf is a beautiful spot to enjoy the night sky.

Enjoy the Sunrise at New Brighton Beach

The sun rises a bit later in winter, giving you plenty of time to get up in the morning and make your way down to the beach. Just before the sun rises, the temperature drops and the sand freezes over and creates beautiful patterns- a photo worthy sight!

Entertain the kids

Entertain your kids over the winter school holidays with KidsFest. With hundreds of cool events and activities – from lantern parades to theatre shows, there’s plenty of fun stuff to keep the kids amused.

Snuggle into your seat

Head to one of the many boutique cinemas in the city to enjoy the latest films. Our top cinema picks are: Alice Cinematheque & Deluxe Cinema - where you can even buy wine and a cheese board to enjoy during the movie!

Christchurch is full of awesome things to see and do all year round - check out our "Must Dos" for Spring, Summer and Autumn!
