Tonight, a pump track for bikes, skateboards, skates and scooters launches in the city with a night-time event from 5 - 8pm.
The pump track launch has been timed to coincide with the Winter Solstice Night Light Bike Ride 2018 which sees hundreds of illuminated riders of all ages take to Hagley Park at dark.
Riders are invited to stop by before or after the night ride event.
The pump track is located in the new-look Mollet Street, part of the South Frame near the Justice and Emergency Services precinct.
The track is wooden and a cross between a mini-velodrome loop track and a BMX course, with bumps and corners designed for fun skills riding and generating speed without pedalling.
The project has been designed and installed to provide an exciting space for youth and the young at heart to discover and be active in the city.
The pump track called ROLL WITH IT is the latest project from urban regeneration initiative, Gap Filler and has been designed and installed to provide an exciting space for youth and the young at heart to discover and be active in the city.
Roll With It adds to Gap Filler’s recent offerings with youth in mind in the city with projects like Super Street Arcade and the giant spray cans, basketball court and youth space at the One Central development on Lichfield/Manchester Streets proving popular with many young people.
Tonight’s event is open to anyone to stop by and try out the track on any wheeled contraption!
There will be hot soup, hot drinks and a BBQ to keep bellies warm and full. Local musician The Blues Professor will provide live entertainment.
“The kids on scooters, bikes and skateboards that we’ve seen using the track are really enjoying it. They’re stopping by on their way to or from Washington Way skatepark” says Damian Doyle, Gap Filler project developer.
“So many activities and spaces for youth were lost in the quakes so it feels good to address that somewhat with this project.”
