Novotel Christchurch officially opens

5 September 2013

Christchurch Central's MP Nicky Wagner, officially re-opened the Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square hotel today – Accor's second city centre hotel to open since the February 2011 earthquake.

The Member of Parliament was on hand to unveil a commemorative plaque and host a luncheon to celebrate the official opening, together with Hotel Owners, Pacifica Partners Managing Director, Peter Meyer, Accor's Vice President for New Zealand & Fiji, Garth Simmons and hotel General Manager, Carl Braddock.

Over 50 people attended the event including industry partners, local businesses and residents along with representatives from Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism, the Christchurch City Council and CERA, who are credited with "valuable assistance" in the timely re-opening of the hotel.

Speaking at the official opening, MP Wagner acknowledged Accor's commitment to Christchurch and the importance of the addition of much needed capacity for the city and region.

Accor Vice President New Zealand & Fiji, Garth Simmons, said the official re-opening of Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square has come exactly one year after we re-opened Ibis Christchurch.

"We are very proud of where we are today, not only to be reopening our second Christchurch hotel, but of the physical and emotional strength that has been shown by our team, lead by General Manager of the hotel, Carl Braddock," said Mr. Simmons.

"As a company we are committed to the success and revitalisation of Christchurch and we are very grateful to the New Zealand Government and the City of Christchurch for all their continued support in helping us to re-open this hotel.

"We thank Minister Brownlee, through his MP for Central Christchurch, Nicky Wagner, for his tremendous support in the rebuild of the city and the re-opening of the Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square, in what is another victory for Canterbury and the region’s tourism industry," concluded Mr. Simmons.

The re-opening of Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square is set to help accelerate the city's regeneration process and will allow significant progress to be made in reviving Christchurch’s central business district and tourism industry.

Novotel Christchurch Cathedral Square joins Accor's other central city hotel, Ibis Christchurch, both owned by Host Hotels & Resorts, Inc. in adding new accommodation, gym, dining and conference facilities to the city. The hotel will play a major role in Christchurch’s ability to host large tour groups, major conferences and boost local employment.
